Operating Tips

At Woodend Mini Excavator Hire we want you to get the most out of our equipment during the period of hire which is why we offer new users a free 'machine familiarisation' session to get you up and running.  However, it is in every one's interest that the machine is operated safely  - the following tips are intended as a guide only to assist new users plan their job and operate the machine safely.

01

Site Knowledge and Pre-planning

  • Dial before you dig - Visit https://www.1100.com.au or Click here to download the Victorian Service Guidelines.
  • Obtain advice from the council or request site plans for gas lines and underground utilities
  • Look up! - Check for power lines and over head obstructions
  • Pets, Children, Pedestrians, Property - wherever possible try and isolate your job site to avoid children and pets from coming too close to the machine when in use.

02

Travelling on Site

  • Select a route on your job site which is as even as possible
  • When travelling up a slope extend the boom and bucket in front of you and position the levelling blade behind you and slightly off the ground.  In this position the blade will make contact with the ground when the machine is on a slope indicating you may either need to stop or extend the boom further out
  • When travelling down a slope keep the boom and bucket extended and close to the ground
  • Only ever travel up or down a slope, never across it.

03

Digging and Trenching

  • When using a mini excavator for digging and trenching operations always dig with the bucket behind you where circumstances permit. Pre-position the machine so that the leveling blade is at the rear and lowered so that it is in contact with the ground and beginning to take the weight of the machine without lifting the tracks.  This will pin the machine and provide a counter force to the ground resistance.

  • Make sure the machine is level when trenching.  This will ensure your trench is square and will help avoid cave ins.

  • Never dig under the excavator or with the tracks directly over or on the edges of a trench
